Apprenticeship Standards

Apprenticeship Standards give you the chance to combine working in the industry that you want to work in along with classroom learning. There are different levels and durations of standards, which typically last from 12-24 months. As well as picking up practical skills, you could also be picking up a pay cheque, depending on the type of standard you choose.

I have recently completed the L2 Health and Social Care Standard with South West Skills Academy and Cornwall College. Before I started this job in care, I was completely new to the industry. By doing my apprenticeship whilst working, it allowed me to learn skills and techniques required in care. The staff at South West Skills Academy were helpful throughout and very flexible, they worked around me meaning that I didn’t have to take time off work. This allowed me to learn whilst committing to full time employment.

What Will I Be Doing?

It varies to the standard you choose, but it will be part work, part education. Most standards contain the following elements

  • Diplomas
  • Development of key employment skills
  • Personal development
  • Work experience – applying your skills on a placement with an employer
  • Work-based assessment
  • Technical certificates
  • Functional Skills

Equipping you with the skills and knowledge you need, your standard is designed to lead directly to a career in your chosen field.
